When considering “state” flags, realize that this term is used in different ways.  First, a national flag symbolizes a country.  Countries throughout the world are often called states. Therefore, a state flag of Denmark would mean a flag for the nation of Denmark.

National flags are divided into types.  The three distinctive types of flags used on land are civil flags, state flags, and military flags.  State flags are those used officially by government agencies.  Civil flags may be flown by anyone, and military flags are used by military organizations.

On the other hand, people of a particular country, such as the United States, which is divided into sections (states), may think of state flags as those flags pertaining to a particular part of the country.  Vintage state flags of this type are particularly popular among collectors.
