Vintage Flags
Originally, flag were pieces of cloth, frequently bunting, flown from a pole or mast used for signaling or identification. They assisted in military strategy on battlefields and where communication was difficult, such as from sea to shore. Nowadays, the term flag also refers to graphic designs and flags depicted in other media.
While vintage flags are connected to particular purposes, flags are often used in advertising and for decorative purposes. While most people associate the word, flag, with national or state flags, vintage flags can be found for branches of the armed forces, particular sports, different languages, political movements, modes of transportation, and so on.
Although usually rectangular in shape, flags do not have to be. The flag of Nepal is shaped like two stacked triangles. Common designs in new and vintage flags include stripes, crosses, division of the field into bands or quarters, and use of symbols derived from coat of arms.
Vintage flag collectors collect by color, country, state, time period, design, or other criteria. A beautifully unique room can be designed around one special vintage flag or a collection!
